PROF. KANU DEFENDS HIS LEADERSHIP AMIDST CALLS FOR HIS REMOVAL
In the wake of Concerned Lecturers calls for his removal, Professor Philip Kanu, Vice Chancellor and Principal of MMTU, has defended his leadership and urged his critics to recognize his contributions to the university rather than focus on negative rhetoric. Speaking candidly, Professor Kanu emphasized that his various development projects at the university stand as evidence of his dedication and commitment to the institution’s growth.
He remained confident that, ultimately, God Almighty would be the true judge of his efforts, and reassured his supporters and detractors alike that he holds no ill will toward those calling for his dismissal. “I urge my critics to consider what has been achieved rather than resort to vilification,” he stated.
In his address, Professor Kanu also highlighted the pressing challenges the university faces, particularly the recruitment of qualified lecturers and staff. To address these concerns, he revealed plans to establish a new University Court aimed at tackling these issues in the near future.
In addition, the Vice Chancellor and Principal addressed an ongoing problem within the university community. He cautioned lecturers against exploiting financially struggling students, especially in relation to the collection of money for attending lectures. He acknowledged the difficulties students face in accessing lectures due to financial constraints and other factors, and pledged to work toward alleviating these challenges. As part of his commitment, he insisted that contractors urgently provide student hostels, despite their incomplete status.
Looking forward, Professor Kanu, through the Public Relations Officer, has announced that a general staff meeting is scheduled for tomorrow, Wednesday, 7th May 2025, with the Minister of Tertiary Education in attendance. The meeting will focus on discussing solutions to the university’s current challenges. The administration has urged all staff members to attend. Similarly, the Concerned Lecturers group has echoed this call for full participation.
