Mohamed Kabia, 32, appeared before Freetown Magistrate Court on charges of cyber bullying, shedding light on the escalating dangers of social media misuse.
Mohamed Kabia was arraigned on January 12, 2025, for allegedly using WhatsApp to threaten and defame a colleague, Robert Saila Kamara. Court documents reveal that Kabia, operating under the account name MAGBOKEH BORBOR allegedly sent bullying messages targeting Robert Salia Kamara of Thompson Bay, Wilkinson Road, in Freetown. These messages purportedly threatened Kamara’s safety and damaged his reputation.
When the charge was read, Kabia did not enter a plea.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Sorie Conteh led the prosecution, calling Kamara as the first witness. Kamara, who manages Leone Rock Metal Group, testified that he knew the accused as they had previously lived together. He explained that on January 13; while working as a district secretary for the SLPP in Tonkolili, he received reports from group members about posts made against him on social media.
The complainant instructed his colleagues to screenshot the posts, which included a message about his suspension from office, claiming he was dismissed due to criminal conduct. He identified the message as originating from Kabia’s WhatsApp account, which he later printed as evidence, marked as Exhibit Z. Kamara reported the incident to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at Pademba Road, resulting in Kabia’s arrest.
He further disclosed that Kabia posted these messages across several social media groups, including the Constituency New Direction Group, Vision State House Group, and Radical Inclusion Group. In these posts, Kamara’s image was used along with defamatory labels, such as calling him a thief. Kamara stated that as a consequence of the posts, he was suspended from his job.
The prosecution stated that Kabia was later arrested on a warrant and had given a statement to police. Magistrate Fornah, citing the seriousness of the offense, refused to grant bail and adjourned the case to June 17, 2025.
