The long-awaited Marcus Super Cup 2025 officially kicked off on Friday, 1st August 2025 at the Akibo-Betts Municipal School Community Field with a colourful opening ceremony.
The event was graced by notable stakeholders from the Soja Town community and beyond, alongside media practitioners who turned up not only for the love of football but also to support Marcus Bangura, the pioneer and visionary behind the tournament.
This year’s gala runs from Friday, 1st August to Friday, 22nd August 2025, a date specially chosen to honour the birthday of Marcus Bangura, whose passion and leadership have made the Marcus Super Cup a unifying celebration for the Soja Town community. Guided by its inspiring theme, “Promoting Unity, Youth Development and Peace,” the tournament seeks to use football as a force for social cohesion. Its motto, “Let the Spirit of Football Unite Us All,” is a rallying call for players, fans, and the wider public to come together through the beautiful game.
This year’s edition features nine competitive teams: Soldier Street, Hill Street, Fort Street, De Junction, Magnum FC, FC Aliko, Twin Mission, Angola FC, and H2O Purified. Each brings its own style, talent, and determination, promising weeks of thrilling football action.
Day 1 – Friday, 1st August: The opening match was a statement of intent. De Junction punished Hill Street in a commanding 5–0 victory. From the first whistle, De Junction controlled the pace, defending solidly and attacking with precision. The match not only thrilled fans but also set the competitive tone for the tournament.
At the end of the match, Marcus Bangura presented special awards and cash prizes to the game’s standout performers. Abass, recognised for his strong and tactical defensive display, received the Man of the Match Award along with a cash prize. Oscar “The Wonder Boy”, whose spectacular strike broke the deadlock and opened the scoring, was honoured as the First Goal Scorer of the Tournament and also received a cash prize for his achievement.
Day 2 – Saturday, 2nd August: Magnum FC cruised to a 4–0 victory over Angola FC in a heated contest. Angola’s frustration showed as they ended the match with two red cards, leaving them short-handed and unable to contain Magnum’s relentless attacks.
Day 3 – Sunday, 3rd August: Soldier Street faced H2O Purified Water in what promised to be an exciting battle. However, H2O Purified proved far too strong, cruising to a resounding 7–1 victory. According to commentary expert Sillah, H2O Purified is the most expensive team in the Marcus Super Cup, boasting a blend of homegrown talents, former and current Sierra Leone Premier League players, as well as Division One stars. The team’s strength lies in the perfect mix of experienced veterans and emerging talents, a formula that makes the Marcus Super Cup not only competitive but also a platform for empowering young players. Kudos to Lawyer Abib, the manager of H2O Purified, for assembling such a formidable squad.
So far, the first three days of play have registered 16 goals in total, a clear sign of the exhilarating action this year’s gala promises.
The exciting play will continue next weekend, starting Friday, 8th August 2025. The weekend fixtures are as follows:
- Friday: Fort Street vs Angola Community
- Saturday: FC Aliko vs De Junction
- Sunday: Twin Mission vs H2O Purified Water
The success of this tournament rests on the exuberance, commitment, and support of Marcus Bangura, the pioneer and visionary behind the Marcus Super Cup, combined with the solid groundwork laid by the youth of the Soja Town community, whose dedication has turned a dream into reality.
As the matches continue, the Marcus Super Cup will not only crown champions but also strengthen unity, inspire the youth, and keep the spirit of football alive in Soja Town.
Come one, come all, and let the spirit of football unite us all!
