Police Crack Down on Illegal Roadside Activities at Jui Junction

By SKS

In a decisive move to curb urban lawlessness, Freetown-East police, led by AIG Francis Brima Meinday, conducted a crackdown at Jui Junction, clearing the streets of illegal roadside trading and obstructive vehicles.

The crackdown targeted illegal roadside activities that have contributed to traffic congestion and public safety risks.

AIG Meinday explained that the operation was prompted by persistent lawlessness and indiscipline at the junction. “For some time now, we’ve been witnessing illegal stalls, tables, Kekeh vendors, and Okada riders occupying pedestrian sidewalks and blocking the roads,” he said. “This has severely disrupted traffic flow and endangered lives, so we took decisive action.”

The police team dismantled makeshift stalls, removed illegal signage and furniture, and cleared the roadways of Kekeh and Okada bikes. They also established designated parking zones for vendors and riders, which has significantly eased congestion and improved safety for pedestrians and motorists alike.

“This enforcement is part of a broader government effort to decongest the city’s key roads,” AIG Meinday added. “Similar crackdowns have been carried out in Sani Abacha Street, Model Junction along Hillside Bypass, and other major areas. Our goal is to ensure order and protect the public.”

Resident Alhaji Sow, who lives in Jui, commended the police for their efforts. “This operation shows effective coordination,” he said. “It’s good to see the streets being cleared of obstructions. However, sustainable success will require ongoing engagement with traders, better alternatives, and consistent enforcement to prevent a relapse.”

Police personnel remained strategically deployed at key points throughout Jui Junction to monitor compliance and ensure that the area remains free of illegal roadside activities.

The operation marks a significant step towards safer and more organized urban traffic management in Freetown.
