The Sierra Leone Police’s recent comprehensive training for prosecutors marks a pivotal step toward reforming and strengthening the country’s justice system. By equipping prosecutors with a thorough understanding of the Criminal Procedure Act (CPA) 2024, the initiative aims to enhance the efficiency, fairness, and integrity of judicial proceedings across Sierra Leone.
The event was held at the Police Wives Multipurpose Hall in Kingtom.
The training focused on enhancing prosecutors’ understanding and application of the new legal framework, a move seen as vital for strengthening the country’s justice systems.
Deputy Inspector General Sahr Yomba Senesi addressed participants, describing the CPA 2024 as a significant milestone for Sierra Leone’s judiciary. He urged prosecutors to thoroughly master the provisions of the law, emphasizing that their competence in its application would be crucial for securing convictions and fostering public trust.
“The CPA is more than just a law; it is a tool for justice. Prosecutors must understand it in its entirety to deliver effective service,” DIG Senesi stated.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Juan Bull Kamara, head of the Legal and Justice Support Department, underscored the vital role prosecutors play in the success of the new law. “The courtroom is not a place for endless adjournments. A careless prosecutor is the greatest enemy of justice,” he cautioned, urging prosecutors to treat the Act as “a living reality and not just words on paper.”
Director of Training, ACP Joe Kamanda Bongay, explained that the training was designed to sharpen prosecutors’ skills and boost their confidence in handling cases under the new law. “This session aims to minimise errors and ensure prosecutors are well-prepared to represent cases effectively in court,” he said.
Senior State Counsel Alberta Kargbo from the Law Officers’ Department also attended the session, along with police prosecutors from various courts who regularly interact with lawyers and magistrates.
The training is expected to significantly improve their ability to interpret and apply the provisions of the CPA 2024 in their duties.
The initiative is part of the SLP’s broader efforts to enhance professionalism within its ranks and ensure the effective enforcement of justice and the rule
